FOUR CANADIANS ON WNBA ROSTERS AS SEASON KICKS OFF
TORONTO, Ont. (May 18, 2018) - With the WNBA season set to kick off today, four players will be representing Canada to begin the new season. In a league where international players are frequent additions to rosters, Canada is able to boast four individuals on WNBA rosters to begin the season.
One of those promising prospects happens to be New York Liberty rookie, Kia Nurse. Highly touted coming out of the University of Connecticut, Nurse averaged 13.5 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 2.8 APG, and 1.3 SPG in her senior season and drew the attention of WNBA scouts. Nurse was drafted 10th overall by the Liberty, where she will make her highly anticipated debut this season.
Adut Bulgak will also be returning to the Chicago Sky this season after playing five games with the team last season. After averaging 12.7 PPG and 7.8 RPG in her senior season at Florida State, Bulgak was drafted in the first round by the New York Liberty in 2016 and will look to offer that same kind of contribution to the Sky this year.
At the end of her college career, Kayla Alexander left Syracuse University as the team's all-time leader in points, blocks, field goals, free throws made, free throws attempted, and games played. She became just the second Syracuse player to get drafted into the WNBA, where she played for the San Antonio Stars and became a key contributor off the bench. Prior to the season, Alexander was traded to the Indiana Fever where she will play alongside fellow Canadian Natalie Achonwa.
Achonwa, a graduate of the University of Notre Dame where she played for the Fighting Irish, had an illustrious career before being drafted ninth by the Indiana Fever in 2014. After bouncing back from injuries last season, Achonwa will be hoping to carry that momentum into team success for the Fever this season.
Nurse, Bulgak, Alexander, and Achonwa have all cracked competitive WNBA rosters for good reason and will represent Canada with pride as they continue to pursue their professional careers. Despite the various journeys that each of these four women have had to get to the WNBA, each player represents the impressive collection of talent that the country has to offer.
