Serbia-Croatia and Spain-Greece in round of 16 at world basketball championship

ISTANBUL - With the field down to 16 teams, the knockout stage of the basketball world championship begins Saturday with two highly anticipated matchups.

Balkan rivals Serbia and Croatia, who fought a war in the early 1990s, play the opening game at the Sinan Erdem Dome. That's followed by Spain versus Greece, two of the pre-tournament favourites. Spain beat Greece for the title four years ago in Japan.

Argentina captain and Houston Rockets forward Luis Scola sank two free throws with 38 seconds left to make it 77-77, but Serbia's Dusko Savanovic hit a three-pointer with 18 seconds remaining.

ANKARA, Turkey - Oguz Savas scored 20 points as Turkey beat China 87-40 on Thursday in its final group game at the world championship.

Turkey, which had already won Group C, had a 20-0 scoring run to lead 39-13 at the break. Omer Asik's slam dunk gave Turkey a 41-point lead in the final seconds of the third quarter. Semih Erden widened the gap to 47 points with 50 seconds to go in the game.

ANKARA, Turkey - Greece secured a spot in the second round of the basketball world championship and eliminated Ivory Coast with a 97-60 win on Wednesday, spurred by 15 points from Nick Calathes.
