RAUTINS MAKES ALL-STAR TEAM AT NYC TOURNAMENT

Last Updated: November 24, 2009

NEW YORK – Andy Rautins of the Canadian Senior Men's National Team had 11 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and seven steals as Syracuse (4-0) won the championship of the 2K Sports Classic with an 87-71 triumph over defending national champion North Carolina (4-1) on Friday.

The tournament at Madison Square Garden benefitted the Coaches vs. Cancer organization.

Rautins, a senior guard, was named to the all-tournament team. His seven thefts Friday tied several players for fifth on Syracuse's single-game record list.

Junior Wes Johnson earned 2K Sports Classic MVP honours after tallying 25 points and eight rebounds for the Orange against the Tar Heels. Johnson averaged 21.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in the team's two wins at the Garden. He had 17 points and 11 boards in Thursday's semifinal win against California.

The Orange used a 22-1 run at the start of the second half on Friday to overcome a two-point halftime deficit and hand the Tar Heels their first loss of the season.

The victory marked the second straight year Syracuse defeated the reigning NCAA champs to win a season-opening tournament. The Orange knocked off 2008 national champ Kansas to win last year’s O’Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic.

Trailing at the intermission for the first time all season, the Orange turned a 39-37 deficit into a 16-point victory by outscoring the Tar Heels 50-32 in the second half.

Overall, the Orange placed five players in double figures as Arinze Onuaku (15 points), Brandon Triche (11 points) and Kris Joseph (12 points) also reached double digits.

Ed Davis paced the Tar Heels with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
