JUNIOR MEN TO FACE BRAZIL, PUERTO RICO, URUGUAY AT FIBA AMERICAS U18

Last Updated: April 09, 2010

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The draw is set and Canada Basketball’s Junior Men’s National Team will take on Brazil, Puerto Rico and Uruguay as part of Group ‘A’ at the 2010 FIBA Americas U18 Championship taking place June 26-30.

FIBA Americas conducted the draw Friday afternoon in the host city of San Antonio. The top four teams in the tournament will receive a berth to the 2011 FIBA U19 World Championship.

“Canada Basketball is always proud to be a part of this tournament that consistently showcases great competition at this age group,” said Wayne Parrish, CEO and Executive Director for Canada Basketball.

“One of our main goals is player development, and the U18 competition provides an opportunity for Canada ’s young elite athletes to gain valuable international experience. Our teams have been successful recently and we look forward to another quality result.”

Friday's at the Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio assigned the eight teams from North, South and Central America as well as the Caribbean to one of two pools of four for the preliminary round of the competition.

“The FIBA Americas U18 Championship is always a challenging tournament and there are no easy preliminary round games,” said Greg Francis, Junior Men’s National Team Head Coach.

“Canada has had increasing success at the U18 age group and by playing hard we look to continue that record. While the age group tournaments are tough because it is a brand new squad of athletes for each qualifier, there is a lot of experienced Canadian talent that we have available for this event.”

Among the Group ‘A’ teams, Canada defeated Puerto Rico in the 2008 edition of the event to earn the bronze medal, thereby qualifying for the 2009 FIBA World Championships. Uruguay finished sixth at that tournament, while Brazil did not compete.

Group ‘B’ features the gold and silver medallists from the 2008 tournament, the United States and Argentina. Mexico and the U.S. Virgin Islands round out that pool. Mexico finished seventh in 2008 while the U.S. Virgin Islands did not qualify for the tournament.

The top two finishing teams in each preliminary round group will advance to the medal round semifinals and play for first to fourth places. Teams placing third and fourth in each preliminary round group will advance to the consolation semifinals and play for fifth to eighth places.

Canada’s Junior Men’s Team finished the 2008 tournament in third place behind the U.S. and Argentina. In 2006, Team Canada finished fourth. Both placements resulted in berths to the U19 FIBA World Championship.

The FIBA Americas U18 Championships has been held since 1990, but was previously known as the FIBA Americas Junior World Championship Qualifier. The event was also held in San Antonio in 2006.

The competition has been the jumping off point for many successful players including Canadians Jamaal Magloire and Todd MacCulloch (1994) and current Senior National Team player Jesse Young (1998). The tournament has also seen players like Chris Bosh, Derron Williams and Carmelo Anthony (2002), Grant Hill (1990) and Michael Beasley (2006).

Canada’s 2010 National Teams

Overall, Canada ’s National Teams will have a busy summer in 2010, with both the Cadet Men’s and Women’s Teams qualifying for the FIBA U17 World Championships. At the highest level, Canada’s Senior Men’s and Women’s Teams both qualified for the 2010 World Championships taking place in Turkey and the Czech Republic respectively. Joining dominant countries like Argentina , Australia, China, Spain and the U.S., Canada is one of only six FIBA nations to achieve this distinction.
