MONTREAL'S KRIS JOSEPH EARNS BIG EAST 6TH MAN AWARD
Last Updated: March 12, 2010
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Syracuse Orange sophomore forward Kris Joseph of Montreal has been named Big East Conference Sixth Man of the Year. The announcement was made by the conference office on Monday, the day before the start of the league tournament in New York.
Joseph has played in all 31 games for Syracuse (28-3, 15-3) this season. An injury to Arinze Onuaku forced Joseph into the starting lineup for one game but he came off the bench in the other 30 outings. Joseph is averaging 11.0 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, the third-best marks on the squad.
He has scored in double digits in 19 games this season, including a career-high 23 against Providence. Joseph has posted double-doubles against Florida (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Marquette (14 points, 11 rebounds).
“He should be the Sixth Man of the Year in the country," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim told the Syracuse Post-Standard newspaper. “He’s had a great year."
The Orange won the Big East regular-season championship and are the top seed in this week's conference tournament.
Joseph is the first Syracuse player to win the Sixth Man award, which was first presented in 2007-08.
“KrisJo is certainly capable of starting anywhere in the country, but we’re fortunate to have him on our bench," Syracuse senior Andy Rautins told the Post-Standard. “He has no problems coming off the bench and he has that mindset and mentality that he’ll help us anyway he can."
On Sunday the conference announced its All-Big East squads. From the Orange, Wes Johnson was a first-team selection, Rautins, of Canada's Senior Men's National Team, a second-team pick, and Brandon Triche was named to the all-rookie squad.
