CADETTES' RALLY FALLS SHORT IN LOSS TO ARGENTINA

Last Updated: July 29, 2010

RODEZ, France – A rally by the Canadian Cadette Women’s National Team (CWNT) fell short Friday as they lost to Argentina 59-51 at the FIBA U17 World Championship.

"This was not a surprise, we knew Argentina was a physical team," said CWNT Head Coach Jacqueline Lavallee. "We just didn't respond, we didn't show up until the fourth quarter when we actually started playing."

The leading scorer of the tournament, Nirra Fields (Lachine, Que.), led the team in scoring but was held to 11 points. The 5-foot-8 guard also led the team with 10 rebounds, six of which came from the offensive glass.

"They really focused in on Nirra and that put us down offensively a little bit," said forward Shalie Dheensaw (Victoria), who grabbed eight rebounds. "She started creating a lot for her teammates in the second half that allowed us to come back, but we ran out of time."

The Canadians started off slowly as they were outscored 25-14 by the South Americans in the opening quarter. In the second half, the Cadette women stopped the bleeding as they cut the deficit down to nine going into the final quarter.

They outscored their opponents 37-34 in the final three quarters, but it was not enough to push them past the Argentines.

The CWNT focused on their inside game, outscoring their opponents 26-20 in the paint. They also showed a strong effort on the glass as they outrebounded Argentina 43-35 and generated 10 points out of 16 offensive rebounds.

Carolina Martinez led Argentina with a game high 14 points. Rocio Diaz and Diana Cabrera added 11 points apiece.

The loss eliminated Canada (1-5) from a Top 10 finish in the tournament. If the Cadette women beat Mali on Saturday they will finish 11th. The game is at noon local time (6 a.m. ET) and can be followed live at www.france2010.fiba.com.

"Even though they [Mali] haven’t won any games, they are not going to let up," added Dheensaw. "They are going to come out strong and we have to come out stronger if we want to win."

Argentina will play Turkey for ninth place.

China will play the USA and Belgium goes up against France in Saturday's semifinals.
