CANADIAN BIG MEN RETURN NORTH OF THE BORDER TO TAKE ON THE RAPTORS

Last Updated: March 11, 2010

TORONTO – Canadian Men’s National Team centre Joel Anthony and fellow Canuck big man Jamaal Magloire will be making their second trip of the season to Toronto when the Miami Heat (21-20) face the Raptors (21-22) at the Air Canada Centre on Wednesday, Jan. 27 (TSN2 7:00 p.m.).
Anthony is a Montreal native, while Magloire was born and raised in Toronto, playing his high school basketball at Eastern Commerce.

“Any time a Canadian player comes back home it boosts the profile of our athletes and the game in this country,” said Leo Rautins, Head Coach for Canada’s Senior Men’s National Team.

The Heat a one-game lead over the Raptors for sixth place in the Eastern Conference and is only a half game behind Charlotte for fifth. Anthony is again a defensive presence for the Heat, leading the team with 1.35 blocks per game.

The game marks the third meeting between the Heat and Raptors this season, with each team winning on their respective home court. Toronto and Miami are both 5-5 in their last 10 games.

“Joel and Jamaal are both very proud Canadians,” added Rautins. “It’s a great chance for basketball fans across the country to see our homegrown talent and what the potential is for our national team as we prepare for the World Championship this summer.”

Both players have donned the red and white as members of Canada’s National Team. Malgoire played on the Junior Men's National Team in the mid 1990s, competing in a FIBA World Championship qualification tournament. Anthony serves as the starting centre for Canada’s “Road Warriors” Senior Men’s National Team.

Canada finished fourth at the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship, successfully earning a berth to the 2010 FIBA World Championship taking place Aug. 28-Sept. 12 in Turkey.

In addition to their professional and national team commitments, Anthony and Magloire are both active in growing the game of basketball in their communities.

“They have so much to offer young Canadian players with regard to their strong work ethic, overcoming obstacles and staying humble, and they love to share this wisdom,” commented Rautins.
