Host Dynamiques And Broncos To Clash In CCAA Final

Match 5: VIU Mariners 93, St. Clair Saints 89 (OT)

Led by Shayce Johnson, the St. Clair Saints scored early and jumped out to a 14-point lead over the Mariners (PACWEST). St. Clair led 33 to 19 after the opening quarter. The Saints took a 47-40 lead into half time.

The Mariners, however, cut into the Saints lead in the third quarter to cut the lead to a single point after three periods.

An exciting fourth quarter finished in an 83-83 tie. Overtime was back and forth, but the Mariners took the game 93-89.

The Player of the Game for the Saints was Anna Ulicny, who played all 45 minutes and scored 22 points and added 3 assists. St. Clair’s Jana Kucera had an outstanding game as well with 34 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds. But she fouled out of the game in the fourth quarter.

As for the Mariners, Shayce Johnston took home Player of the Game honors with 27 points and an impressive 20 rebounds. Avery Snider stood out for the Mariners as well, scoring 20 points with 20 rebounds.

Match 6: Fanshawe Falcons 70, MSVU Mystics 63

The second contest of the afternoon, between the MSVU Mystics and Fanshawe Falcons, got off to an intense start. The Mystics finished the first quarter with a 3-point lead, 18 to 15.   Backed by a noisy contingent of fans, Bill Carriere’s OCAA conference champion team rallied back and led the Falcons 35-25 at the end of the first half.

At the start of the second, the Mystics tried to turn the game around but the Falcons hit two three-point shots early in the third quarter to pull ahead 43-25. CCAA Coach of the Year Mark Forward’s squad came back and trailed only 53-45 in the second half of the third quarter. But the rally fell short and the Falcons led 57-46 at the end of the third.

At the start of the fourth quarter, MSVU’s Nikki Arsenault took things in hand, allowing the Mystics to tie the game 58-58 with six minutes left in the game. CCAA All-Canadian Chuot Angou dashed the Mystics’ hopes however, with two three-pointers in the final minutes.

The Player of the Game for the Mystics, Maria Rodrigues, scored 16 points. As for the Falcons, Angou was named Player of the Game with a 24-point, 5-rebound performance.

The Mystics’ Nikki Arsenault offered a noteworthy performance, scoring 16 points and gathering 6 rebounds.

Match 7: Olds Broncos 71, Dawson Blues 70

The Dawson Blues and Olds Broncos played a hotly-contested, tight game for a right to play in the CCAA National Championship final.  

The Albertan team led 19-15 at the end of the first quarter.  The Olds Broncos held their lead throughout the second quarter and led 41-34 heading into the second half.  

The Dawson Blues opened up the machine to hit the 55-point mark at the end of the third quarter, but trailed the Broncos by three. The tide seemed to turn early in the fourth quarter when the Blues took the lead 59-58. With two minutes remaining, the Broncos were up one, 68-67.  

CCAA Player of the Year Brittney Thibeaux scored to put her team ahead 69-68 with a minute remaining. Roxane Makolo of the Blues tied the game 69-69. The crowd was on the edge of their seats until the last seconds of the game when Krisitna Bajovic scored on a free throw to win it 71-70 for the Broncos.

Sorelle Ineza was named game MVP for the Dawson Blues on the merit of her 15-point effort.  For the Broncos, it was a formality naming Brittney Thibeaux MVP, given her 29 points and 6 rebounds.

Roxane Makolo played a strong game for Dawson, scoring 18 points.  Mackenzie Ash-Smith scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds.

Match 8: Dynamiques de Sainte-Foy 62, Keyano Huskies 55

In front of a packed home-town gymnasium, the Dynamiques de Sainte-Foy and the Keyano Huskies clashed for a berth in the CCAA National Championship final.  T

Missed chances and fouls for both teams marked the play in the first quarter which ended with the Huskies leading 17-14. Both teams kept the crowd on edge during the second quarter. Near the end, the Dynamiques leveled the score, but the Huskies claimed a one-point lead heading into the second half (33-32), making their free throws count.  

The Huskies opened scoring early in the third quarter, but the Dynamiques squared the game at 35-35 halfway through the frame and took the lead thanks to Frédérique Larouche’s three-pointer. The third quarter ended with Sainte-Foy leading 49-42. A spirited fourth quarter saw the Dynamiques take the game by a final score of 62-55, much to the delight of their fans.

The Player of the Game for the Dynamiques was Frédérique Larouche, who scored 16 points and gathered ten rebounds. Of note were the performances of Frédérique Beaudry-Blais, with 20 points and 7 rebounds, as well as Sabrine Khelifi, with 13 points and 6 rebounds.

For the Huskies, Augusta Kievisaite took Player of the Game honors with 21 points and 6 rebounds. Teammate Moyian Toure finished the game with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
