Canada Finishes Third at the FIBA 3X3 Women's Series Lignano

TORONTO, Ont. (July 14, 2019) – Team Canada fell to Spain in the semifinals to finish third at the FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series Lignano this past weekend.

Entering the tournament as the No. 7 seed, Katherine Plouffe, Paige Crozon, Brittany Johnson and Mariah Nunes represented Canada this weekend in Italy.

Canada went 3-0 with wins over Hungary (15-13), Netherlands (16-12) and Ukraine (14-7) to finish first in Pool B and advance directly to the semifinals.  However, in the semifinals, Canada lost to Spain 17-13 to end their run.

The FIBA 3x3 Women's Series is the first-ever FIBA 3x3 competition dedicated to women.  Each national federation can register one team at the FIBA 3x3 Women's Series. Teams then qualify for individual events based on the number of events they have already been allocated to and their team ranking.

The Women's Series Lignano is the fifth event of the FIBA 3x3 Women's Series 2019.  The 2019 season will consist of 8-12 events from May to September.  Canada finished fourth overall in their debut at the FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series Turin.

Australia claimed the first stop of the inaugural FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series in Chengdu, China, while France finished atop the podium at the FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series stops in Turin and earlier this week at Ekaterinburg.  Last weekend, Team Canada fell to Czech Republic in the finals to finish second at the FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series Poitiers.

Canada is currently ranked 45th (7thAmericas) in the FIBA 3x3 Federation Rankings.
