DETAILS ANNOUNCED FOR 2013 CWNT | Canada Basketball

The 2013 edition of the Cadette Women’s National Team (CWNT) will begin preparations for the summer season with a tryout by invitation this Saturday, June 8, in Barrie, Ont. 17 invited athletes will gather at Georgian College for the two-day tryout.

The summer of 2012 saw the CWNT capture the bronze medal at the FIBA U17 World Championship for Women – the first podium-finish that Team Canada has reached at the event. The young women hoping to make the 2013 squad will look to carry that success forward at this summer’s FIBA Americas U16 Championship for Women.

Halifax, N.S. native Carly Clarke will once again be tasked with fulfilling her vision of the team with the assembled athletes. "We are very excited to start a new cycle with an exciting group of young athletes and players. There is something special about working with and taking these players to their first international competition representing Canada,” coach Clarke noted, when asked about this summer.

Coach Clarke will be joined for the third consecutive season by assistant coach Andre Desjardins from École secondaire publique Louis-Riel in Ottawa, Ont. Another familiar face will be Bill Crothers Secondary School’s Jodi Gram, who will return to the team as an assistant coach and performance analyst. Joining the CWNT staff for his first international coaching appointment will be Carleton University women’s basketball head coach Taffe Charles.

While the team’s focus will remain on qualifying for the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship for Women, Clarke recognizes the importance of this season as a learning experience to further the development of the invited athletes. “Our staff will work tirelessly to create an experience for these athletes where they gain an understanding of what it takes to compete and succeed at the international level, while working to develop an increased passion for representing Canada on this stage for years to come."

Following this weekend’s tryout by invitation, the team will continue to practice at Georgian College in a six-day training camp before traveling to Cancun, Mexico to train and compete in exhibition play. The 2013 FIBA Americas U16 Championship for Women will take centre-stage in Cancun beginning June 19. Canada will join Puerto Rico, Venezuela and host nation Mexico in Group B of the five-day tournament.
