TORONTO - Quand la saison 2023 de la Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) débutera le vendredi 19 mai, quatre joueuses canadiennes feront partie de trois organisations différentes.

Kia Nurse, Bridget Carleton, Laeticia Amihere et Natalie Achonwa sont toutes sous contrat avec des équipes WNBA pour la saison 2023, qui débutera par quatre rencontres lors de la soirée d’ouverture.

Parmi les équipes qui joueront leur premier match de la saison vendredi soir, on retrouve le Lynx de Minnesota et Bridget Carleton, qui affronteront le Sky de Chicago pour leurs retrouvailles après avoir joué le premier match WNBA au Canada la semaine dernière à Toronto. Carleton était la seule Canadienne présente sur le terrain durant ce match, un match qui n’était qu’à trois heures de sa ville d’origine de Chatham en Ontario.‍

Carleton vient de terminer sa saison avec Perfumerías Avenida en Espagne et a rejoint le Lynx un peu plus tôt ce mois-ci afin de préparer sa cinquième saison avec l’équipe. Ce sera une saison importante pour Carleton puisqu’elle a été sélectionnée dans le cinq majeur de la Coupe du monde féminine de basketball FIBA en automne dernier après avoir mené le Canada grâce à une moyenne de 12,8 points par rencontre durant la compétition. 

Bien qu’Achonwa, la coéquipière de Carleton au Lynx, ne sera pas présente sur le terrain lorsque la saison débutera, elle est tout de même dans la liste des joueuses de Minnesota pour la soirée d’ouverture. La joueuse originaire de Guelph en Ontario est sous contrat avec le Lynx mais ne joue pas avec l’équipe actuellement, ayant donné naissance à son fils un peu plus tôt dans l’année.

Alors que le visage familier d’Achonwa nous manquera, Nurse, la coéquipière d’Achonwa en équipe nationale senior féminine depuis longtemps, fera son retour. Elle s’apprête à débuter sa sixième saison avec la ligue, mais sa première avec le Storm de Seattle après avoir signé avec l’organisation pendant la saison morte. 

La joueuse originaire d’Hamilton en Ontario a manqué toute la campagne WNBA 2022 à cause d’une blessure à un genou, mais a fait son retour avec l’équipe nationale senior féminine lors de la Coupe du monde féminine de basketball FIBA en automne dernier. Elle a aidé le Canada à terminer à la quatrième place, soit le meilleur résultat de l‘équipe en Coupe du monde depuis 1986.

Désormais, elle s’apprête à faire son retour en WNBA ce printemps. Nurse devrait faire partie des vedettes de Seattle et jouer un rôle majeur au sein de la nouvelle équipe de Seattle. All-Star WNBA, Nurse fait partie des trois Canadiennes dans l’histoire de la ligue à avoir été nommée All-Star WNBA. Elle tentera de se servir de ses très belles performances en Coupe du monde l’automne dernier et de passer au niveau supérieur cette saison. Son premier match WNBA depuis le 6 octobre 2021 aura lieu le samedi 20 mai, quand Nurse et le Storm affronteront les Aces de Las Vegas à 15h00 HE.

À l’autre bout du pays, Amihere va également devoir s’habituer à sa nouvelle équipe. Après avoir été sélectionnée en tant que huitième choix lors du repêchage WNBA 2023, Amihere va rejoindre la WNBA et tentera de se trouver un rôle au sein de l’équipe du Dream d’Atlanta. L’ancienne joueuse des Gamecocks de South Carolina vient de terminer une carrière universitaire impressionnante, et a notamment remporté le championnat national de la NCAA en 2021. La joueuse originaire de Mississauga en Ontario a montré tout son potentiel pendant sa préparation avec le Dream, avec notamment une performance de huit points, six rebonds et un bloc contre les Mystics de Washington. Amihera fera ses débuts en WNBA le samedi 20 mai contre les Wings de Dallas, rencontre qui débutera à 13h00 HE.
