Aaron Doornekamp and Natalie Achonwa have been selected as the Toyota Players of the Week for May 31-June 6.
Achonwa led the Minnesota Lynx (WNBA) averaging 8 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal over two wins. The power forward went on to play for the University of Notre Dame (NCAA) where she led the Fighting Irish to four consecutive Final Four appearances over her university career. Before heading overseas to play in Italy, the 6’3” WNBA star completed her sixth season with the Indiana Fever. Achonwa most recently represented Canada at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament last February, where she helped punch their ticket to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The two-time Olympian averaged 13.3 points per game and was selected to the tournament’s All-Star Five. The Guelph, ON native has been a member of the Senior Women’s National Team program for the past decade, playing a total of 101 games for Team Canada. Achonwa is gearing up to play in her third Olympics with with Canada at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Doornekamp put up a pair of strong performance over two games shooting 56% and putting up 14 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists with Iberostar Tenerife (Spain). The 6’6” small forward from Napanee, ON also led his team to a Liga ACB playoffs quarter-final series win against the San Pablo Burgo’s. Playing for Carleton University (U SPORTS), Doornekamp was named CIS Men's Basketball Player of the Year and the OUA Male Athlete of the Year in 2008. Doornekamp went on to play professionally in Europe and has represented Team Canada at various international tournaments, most notably helping Canada bring home the silver medal at the 2015 Pan American Games and the bronze at the 2015 FIBA America's. Most recently, Doornekamp has accepted an invite to the Senior Mens National Team FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament training camp.
