First day of Action Tipped Off in Regina on Day 1 of U15/U17 Men’s National Championships
THE RUNDOWN
It’s good to be back. At long last, the Canada Basketball U15 and U17 Men’s National Championships arrived in Saskatchewan’s capital — with 12 games held on the opening day of action inside the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport on the campus of the University of Regina.
NOTEWORTHY
- In what’s fair to say was the Game of the Day on Day 1 — British Columbia stunned Ontario to begin their time in Regina with a win. Jayson Ikani led the way for British Columbia, as the Port Coquitlam, B.C. product scored 25 points on 10-18 shooting, to go along with 12 rebounds, to help his province get the win. British Columbia.
- It was a dominant day for Manitoba’s U15 and U17 programs, as they each rolled to decisive victories in the opening games of the day. Eleven of Manitoba’s players on the province’s U15 squad found the scoresheet, as a well-balanced attack helped pace them to a large win over Northwest Territories. Daniel Rom was dialled in, shooting 10-14 from the field and totalling 22 points for his province in 17U Manitoba’s runaway win over Prince Edward Island.
- Home cooking did its thing for Saskatchewan. Hosting Nationals for the first time since 2017, Saskatchewan got Day 1 victories from their U15 and U17 Men’s teams. Syn Tyson was dominant for Saskatchewan’s U15 team, recording 20 points, seven rebounds, seven steals and six assists. And after a bit of a slow start, Saskatchewan found their footing in the second half on the U17 side, as they got past Newfoundland and Labrador. 15 points apiece from Daniel Umejiego and Jacob Dylan Delcastillo powered Saskatchewan to a 102-74 win.
