TORONTO (May 5, 2026) — Canada Basketball announced Tuesday that applications are now open for the newly revamped and renamed Mike MacKay Stewardship Award.

Formerly known as the Mike MacKay Transformational Coaching Award, the reimagined program expands its scope to recognize individuals across the basketball ecosystem who are committed to developing future leaders and growing the game through an athlete- and care-centred approach.

The Mike MacKay Stewardship Award will honour two recipients annually, with one recipient being a female leader working with female athletes, who exemplify the qualities of stewardship within their communities.

Grounded in the belief that the four pillars of leadership are leading yourself, giving energy to the group, living your role and leading others, the award recognizes individuals who consistently embody these principles through their impact and commitment to the growth of the game.

Eligible nominees may include coaches, officials, volunteers, or club administrators working within a Canada Basketball verified program.

“A steward is someone who is looking out for the growth of the game, who leads with care, and who is committed to the development of others,” said Mike MacKay, Director, Technical Development. “This award is about recognizing people who are building something bigger than themselves, creating environments where athletes can thrive, and leaving a lasting legacy in their communities.”

Each recipient will receive a $2,500 bursary in recognition of their contributions to basketball and leadership development. In addition, Canada Basketball will work with each recipient to make best efforts to deliver a stewardship clinic in their province – creating a direct investment in the local basketball community and extending the impact of their work.

The award continues to emphasize the importance of leadership, mentorship, and inclusive sport experiences, while celebrating individuals who prioritize long-term athlete development and community growth.

Originally established to recognize transformational coaches, the evolution to a stewardship model reflects a broader vision, one that acknowledges the many individuals who contribute to the game beyond the sidelines and play a critical role in shaping its future.

This award is inspired by James and Ruth MacKay, parents of Mike MacKay, whose example of care, leadership, and commitment to others continues to influence the program’s vision.

To be eligible, nominees must be at least 18 years of age, a resident of Canada (of at least 12 months), and actively contributing to the development of basketball within a verified program environment. Nominations must be submitted virtually and include supporting references, including one from a current or former athlete.

Interested applicants are encouraged to submit an application by May 22, 2026. Click here to apply.

The award will be distributed through Canada Basketball as the organization continues to unify Canada as a basketball nation by supporting safe, equitable, and inclusive basketball programming. As the National Sporting Organization for the sport of basketball in Canada, Canada Basketball aims to remove access barriers in community organizations focused on delivering programs related to coaching and officiating, leadership and skill development, and serving equity-deserving youth groups across Canada.
