TORONTO (Apr. 2, 2026) — Canada Basketball announced Thursday the coaching staff for the U18 Men’s National Team ahead of the U18 Men’s Selection Camp fuelled by Gatorade, set for April 3–6 at Humber College.
Charles Hantoumakos has been named head coach, marking his first appointment as head coach within Canada Basketball’s men’s high-performance program.
Hantoumakos, an assistant coach with the Pacific Tigers in the NCAA, brings extensive experience at both the national and grassroots levels. Most recently, he served on the U19 Men’s National Team staff in 2025 and helped Canada secure a bronze medal as part of the U18 Men’s National Team coaching staff at the FIBA U18 Men’s AmeriCup 2024.
In addition to his national team experience, Hantoumakos previously served as program director and head coach at Fort Erie International Academy from 2021–24, leading the program to national championships in 2022 and 2024. He has also held head coaching roles with Thornlea Prep, Athlete Institute and Bill Crothers Prep, and brings more than 20 years of coaching experience across the Canadian basketball landscape.
Joining Hantoumakos on the bench are assistant coaches Dave DeAveiro, Murphy Burnatowski and Kyle Landry.
DeAveiro, head coach of the Toronto Metropolitan University Bold, brings extensive experience at both the U SPORTS and international levels. He reached 500 career U SPORTS wins in 2025, becoming just the 19th coach in league history to reach the milestone. DeAveiro has also held multiple roles with Canada Basketball across the senior, development and junior levels, including helping Canada earn silver as an assistant coach at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Burnatowski, currently head coach of the University of Victoria Vikes, recently led the program to a Canada West championship in 2025–26 and a bronze medal at the U SPORTS Final 8. He was named both Canada West and U SPORTS Coach of the Year in 2024–25 after guiding Victoria to a perfect 20–0 conference record and a national championship in his first season at the helm. Prior to Victoria, Burnatowski spent four seasons as lead assistant coach at Dalhousie and also brings experience as a former member of Canada’s national team program and a professional player internationally.
Landry rounds out the staff following his most recent role as an assistant coach with Canada’s U19 Men’s National Team at the FIBA U19 Men’s Basketball World Cup 2025. A former member of Canada’s Senior Men’s National Team, Landry brings extensive international playing experience, including a lengthy professional career in Europe. He currently serves as lead assistant coach with the University of Calgary Dinos and has also coached in the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) with the Calgary Surge.
Canada will compete at the FIBA U18 Men’s AmeriCup 2026, with details regarding competition to be announced.
The pathway toward international competition will begin with the selection camp this week, where top athletes from across the country will compete for a spot at this summer’s final training camp.
Athletes attending the Selection Camp fuelled by Gatorade will be announced Friday.
