TORONTO, Ont. (Nov. 21, 2024) – It is with profound sadness that Canada Basketball mourns the passing of Chad Posthumus, a member of the 3x3 and Senior Men’s National Team.
A native of Winnipeg, Man., Posthumus passed away days after suffering a brain aneurysm during a training session in his hometown.
Chad’s time with the 3x3 National Team was a testament to his versatility and passion for the game. He competed at the 3x3 AmeriCup in 2023, representing Canada with pride and determination.
Attending River East Collegiate, Posthumus established himself as one of Canada’s top high school basketball players, averaging an astounding 39 points, 25 rebounds, and seven blocks in his senior year.
His college basketball journey included stops at the University of British Columbia, Howard College and finally Morehead State University where he was second in the NCAA in rebounding during his senior season with 10.9 boards per game earning All-Ohio Valley Conference honors.
As a professional, Chad played internationally, including in Japan, Argentina, and the NBA Summer League with the Chicago Bulls.
Most recently, Chad captained the Winnipeg Sea Bears in their inaugural CEBL season, where he became a fan favorite for his relentless energy and leadership. He led the league in offensive rebounds, scoring Winnipeg’s first-ever game-winning basket.
Basketball has been a family tradition for the Posthumus family. Chad’s mother, Diana, was a former Canadian National Team member and played for the University of Winnipeg Wesmen.
Off the court, Chad was an advocate for managing Type 1 Diabetes through sports and a healthy lifestyle, having been diagnosed with the condition at just seven years old. The Posthumus family has asked that in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
We offer our deepest condolences to Chad’s family, the Winnipeg community, and the Winnipeg Sea Bears – our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.
