LEON, Mexico (July 21, 2024) - Canada falls to the USA 64-84 in a tightly-fought gold medal game at the FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2024 and will take home a silver medal, the program’s best in its history.
Savannah Swords led all scorers with 15 points and six rebounds. Deniya Prawl added 13 points and seven rebounds, while Agot Makeer recorded a double-double, finishing the game with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
This trio led Canada to a 5-1 record over the course of the week.
Canada led by one after the first quarter, but that would remain their only lead of the game as the USA pulled ahead, leading by twenty by the end of the game. However, Canada made it a two-possession game several times, often within single digits.
Canada shot 33.9 percent from the field overall and went 3-15 from the three-point line. The USA wasn’t much far off on offence, but they won the rebounding battle 58-41 against Canada, creating stops to run away with the lead.
Jordyn Wheeler added 10 points, and Rachael Okokoh put up five boards.
Canada caps off a historic run at the FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup with an exciting future of growing talent.
"There are so many good take aways [from this week], It is hard to pick one," said head coach Fabienne Blizzard. "This was a special team, I feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to coach one of the most talented group of athletes in Canada. If I have to pick one it would be the 'never quit' attitude that this group had. Their compete fire was insane. On and off the floor. It is rare you have 12 young athletes within this type of mindset. The future is so bright!"
