Canada cruises past Argentina to remain undefeated at FIBA Women’s AmeriCup

SANTIAGO, Chile (June 29, 2025) — Canada improved to 2–0 at the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2025 with a dominant 71–48 win over Argentina on Sunday.

The 23-point victory marks Canada’s second-largest margin of victory against Argentina in program history at the Women’s AmeriCup. The Senior Women’s National Team now holds a 9–6 all-time record against Argentina.

Canada built an early lead, closing the first quarter ahead 20–12 and never looking back. A strong third quarter, where the Canadians outscored Argentina 23–14, helped seal the win.

Shy Day-Wilson led the way with a Senior Women’s National Team career-high 18 points, adding five rebounds and four assists in just under 30 minutes of action. The Toronto guard had a direct hand in 29 of Canada’s 71 points, either by scoring or assisting—accounting for more than 40 per cent of the team’s offence.

“I think we just had to go out there and be tough,” said Day-Wilson postgame. “From the moment the ball went up, you could feel the intensity—we were all locked in and on the same page. We responded well, whether things were going our way or not. And that’s exactly what you need to win.”

Yvonne Ejim added eight points and tied her career-high with 12 rebounds—just one day after setting that mark in the tournament opener against El Salvador. The Calgary native became just the sixth player in Canadian women’s program history to record multiple double-digit rebound games at a single FIBA competition.

Canada controlled the paint throughout, outscoring Argentina 28–18 down low and shooting 57.1 per cent from inside the arc. The team finished with a 43.1 per cent field goal percentage overall and recorded assists on 16 of its 28 made baskets.

Syla Swords chipped in 11 points and hit three of Canada’s six made three-pointers, setting a new career-high in threes made for the SWNT. With five through two games, she has already matched her personal best at a single FIBA tournament.

Kayla Alexander contributed 11 points and four rebounds in under 18 minutes. She now sits just 10 points shy of third place on Canada’s all-time Women’s AmeriCup scoring list, trailing Miranda Ayim (251). The veteran centre also moved to second all-time in rebounds for Canada at the event with 196 — 11 behind Kim Gaucher’s record of 207.

Sunday's game also saw milestone appearances for Sami Hill and Shay Colley, who each played in their 28th career AmeriCup game—tying Tamara Tatham for third-most all-time by a Canadian.

Team Canada head coach Nell Fortner was pleased with the performance.

“We’re continuing to improve our execution,” said Fortner. “We didn’t have to run a lot of sets today because we were able to exploit some other areas offensively. I want us to keep shooting the three—we like the three ball. Overall, I was pleased with our half-court offence.”

Canada will face Brazil in their next group stage matchup on Monday at 2:10 p.m. ET / 11:10 a.m. PT.
