DEBRECEN, HUNGARY (July 12, 2022) - The Canadian U17 Women’s National Team defeated Egypt 67-44 on Tuesday at the FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Hungary.

The Canadians were led by an 11-point, 14-rebound double-double from Cassandre Prosper who also recorded three assists, six steals and three blocked shots as she showed her all-around game in the victory. Toby Lee Fournier added a 13-point, 14-rebound double-double while also recording three steals and three blocked shots. Deniya Trinity Prawl collected 12 rebounds and added five assists and six steals in just 18 minutes of action and Delaney Gibb added 12 points for the Canadians.

Jana Elalfy scored a game-high 15 points for Egypt in the loss, while Jana Sallman added nine points and eight rebounds.

After a slow start to open the game, Canada reeled off a 12-0 run over the final 3:38 of the first quarter, including a bucket at the buzzer by Marina Radocaj off of a gorgeous pass from Cassandre Prosper to take a 11-point lead, 17-6, after the opening 12 minutes.

Egypt outscored Canada 20-15 in the second, using a 6-0 run to get within five, 24-19, with 3:46 to go in the half. A steal and a layup from Deniya Trinity Prawl snapped a scoring drought of more than four minutes for the Canadians and then a three-pointer from Bree Robinson put Canada ahead by eight with 1:41 to go in the half.  After a layup for Egypt's Jana Sallman, Canada held a 32-26 lead at the half.

Canada finished with 20 turnovers in the game, but made up for it with 22 steals. The Canadians also outrebounded Egypt 59-42, including 26-13 on the offensive glass.

Fournier opened the second-half scoring with a layup as Canada’s defence forced Egypt into back-to-back 24-second shot-clock violations before a three-pointer from Summer Bostock extended the lead back to double-digit figures. Another three-pointer for Canada, this time from Prosper, put Canada in front by 13 points with 2:25 remaining in the quarter. After the teams traded turnovers Elalfy made a pair of free throws to get Egypt within 11 with 1:28 remaining. She followed that up with a block before scoring on a layup to make it a nine-point deficit for Egypt as Canada took a 46-37 lead into the fourth.

In the final frame, Canada dialled their defence up a level. A block and a layup from Fournier put Canada back ahead by double figures. Bostock connected on a stepback two to make it an 11-point advantage with 7:40 remaining, and then a baseline jumper from Prosper made it a 13-point lead for Canada.

Egypt struggled to score in the fourth, going scoreless from the 6:41 mark of the fourth until a three-pointer from Sallman with 29 seconds remaining as Canada used a 13-0 run to break the game open.

Canada’s next game is on Wednesday, July 13, time and opponent to be determined.
