Canada punched their ticket to the FIBA U17 Men’s Basketball World Cup 2024 after advancing to Saturday’s semifinal at the FIBA U16 Men’s Americas Championship 2023 with an 89-63 quarter-final win over Mexico on Friday night in Yucatán, Mexico.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- After an undefeated 3-0 group stage record set the stage for Canada to square off with winless Mexico, it was the Canadians who dominated right from tip-off. Despite the home crowd, Mexico found themselves in an early 16-4 deficit, thanks to six points apiece from both Patrick Anamali and Paul Osaruyi in the opening minutes.

- Yet the Mexico continued to chip away and after the slow start, found themselves trailing by just eight points to begin the fourth quarter after outscoring Canada 16-13 in the third. With Canada leading by nine points, a Godson Okokoh corner triple near the halfway point of the frame helped kickstart the Canadians as he stretched the lead to 12 after a sweet dish from Kamai Samuels.

- Okokoh would go on to score seven of his tournament-high 13 points in the fourth quarter, as the Ottawa product helped Canada outscore Mexico 26-9 in the final 5:32 of the fourth and cruise to the country's eighth semifinal appearance in the tournament's history.

- Mexico did not possess one lead throughout the entirety of the basketball game, with Canada holding the advantage ever since Osaruyi's icebreaking bucket at the 9:29 mark of the first quarter all the way until the final buzzer sounded.

‍CANADA HIGHLIGHTS

- Osaruyi continued his standout tournament for Canada, scoring a team-high 22 points on 8-14 shooting, while hauling in 10 rebounds to record his third double-double in four games. Osaruyi's 16.8 points per-game ranks fifth in the tournament.

- Quinten Ethier, Anamali, Samuels and Godson Okokoh joined Osaruyi in double-digits, making it four Canadians with 13+ points in the contest. Jordan Charles had a team-high 11 assists to go along with eight points and six rebounds.

- Canada had their best performance from beyond-the-arc in the tournament, connecting on 10 of their 24 attempts. Okokoh led the way, shooting 3-4 from deep, while Ethier and Anamali combined to shoot 4-8 from deep.

- Not only did the victory help Canada continue its chase toward the podium in Yucatán, it also ensured a top-four finish for the country at the tournament — good for a berth in the FIBA U17 Men's Basketball World Cup 2024. Canada will have the opportunity to improve on a ninth-place finish at the tournament in the 2022.

“It’s a game if runs. We can’t get too high or too low. We need to stick with the game plan and execute throughout. We didn’t do that for the majority of the game and it showed. On the flip side, when we did, we got success. Game plan execution is needed for all four quarters.” - Cheng on his evaluation of the game against Mexico.

- With the win, Canada guaranteed an opportunity to win the country's eighth-consecutive medal at the FIBA U16 Men’s Americas Championship, having reached the podium in every edition of the tournament since its inception in 2009.

- Canada moved to 6-0 all-time against Mexico at the FIBA U16 Men’s Americas Championship. The countries have now met in the last three editions of the tournament dating back to 2019.

- Osaruyi enters Saturday's semifinal averaging 15.8 points per-game which would be the second most by Canadian player since the 2015 edition of the tournament, trailing only current Orlando Magic forward Caleb Houstan.

- Since 2015, only Mikkel Tyne (2021), Houstan and Ryan Nembhard (2019), Cashius McNeilly and RJ Barrett (2015) have averaged 14+ points per-game for Canada at the FIBA U16 Men’s Americas Championship.

- As Cheng frequently has referenced, despite qualifying for next summer's World Cup — 'the job's not done.' Canada is set to square off with Argentina tomorrow night, with a berth in Sunday's FIBA U16 Men's Americas Championship Final on the line.

- Argentina has won three of the five meetings all-time against Canada, including in 2021 — an 81-70 defeat in group stage. The pair of countries last met in a semifinal at the tournament back in 2013, when Argentina overcame a 27-point performance from Canadian Jamal Murray to record a 65-61 win and advance to the FIBA U16 Men's Americas Championship Final.
