LEON, Mexico (July 20, 2024) - Canada’s U17 Women’s National Team claimed a historic win on Saturday night, defeating Spain 77-73 at the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup 2024.

With the victory, Canada will play for gold for the first time in the event and their first podium finish at the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup since 2012, when they won bronze with an 84-77 win over Japan in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Agot Makeer again led the way for Canada, finishing with 21 points, 12 rebounds, 5 steals, 4 assists and 3 blocks.  Savannah Swords, sister of Syla Swords, who will compete this summer for Canada at the Olympic Games in Paris, finished with 16 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals in 35:21 minutes of action.

Despite Spain leading for all but 42 seconds through the first three quarters, Canada went on a dominant 13-3 run to open the fourth and never looked back.

Canada took full advantage of Spanish mistakes, outscoring them 25-14 off turnovers.  As they’ve done throughout the tournament, Canada continued to push the pace, scoring 16 fast break points while limiting Spain to just six.

Canada will now face the United States in the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup 2024 Final on Sunday, July 21, at 10:30 p.m. ET (7:30 p.m. PT).  The two teams are more than familiar, having met at the FIBA U16 Women's Americas Championship 2023 Final last summer.
