Canada's 3x3 Women's National Team bounced back from an early 15-13 loss to Azerbaijan's Neftchi to take a 21-15 win against Malaysia and advance to the FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series Fribourg Stop quarter-finals.
Playing without Michelle and Katherine Plouffe, Paige Crozon and Kacie Bosch have been joined by Samantha Cooper and Carly Ahlstrom in Fribourg. Canada defeated Malaysia behind a nine-point performance from Crozon, who connected on three two-pointers in the victory. Cooper added five points and six rebounds, while Bosch finished with three points and two rebounds while recording three highlights.
After the teams traded baskets to start, the score was tied at four points apiece with 7:43 remaining. Canada then went on a 7-0 run to build an 11-4 advantage, behind two-pointers from Bosch and Ahlstrom. SinJie Tan scored for Malaysia, but Crozon drilled a two-pointer to keep Canada in front by eight. After a bucket for Suet Ying Foo, Crozon hit her second consecutive two-pointer to extend the advantage to nine points with 5:27 remaining.
Crozon’s third two-pointer put Canada in front, 19-10. Cooper scored on an offensive putback to put Canada in position to end the game with 3:36 remaining, but Fook Yee Yap nailed back-to-back two-pointers to get Malaysia within five, until Cooper scored on a layup inside to seal the 21-15 victory with 2:48 remaining on the clock.
In Canada’s first game of the day, they had trouble connecting from long range, as the new-look team worked to find a groove. Ahlstrom finished with five points and six rebounds, as well as two highlights in the loss. Brianna Fraser led Neftchi with seven points and eight assists.
After falling behind by five midway through the game, a two-pointer from Bosch brought Canada back within three. After Fraser scored inside to make it a four-point lead for Neftchi, Ahlstrom made a two-pointer, cutting the deficit in half with 2:23 remaining. Unfortunately, Canada was unable to stop Fraser on back-to-back possessions, again falling behind by four with 1:19 remaining. They wouldn’t get any closer the rest of the way through.
Next up, the Canadians will face China in the quarter-finals at 8:30 a.m. ET/5:30 a.m. PT on Friday. Fans can catch all of the action live on the FIBA 3x3 YouTube channel.
