IRAPUATO, Mexico (July 17, 2024) - Canada’s U17 Women’s National Team secured an 84-50 win over Puerto Rico to advance to the Round of 16 at the FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2024.
Agot Makeer started the game on a solo 5-0 run and finished the game with 21 points, six rebounds, and five assists, knocking down three triples.
Savannah Swords was right behind with 17 points, four rebounds, and six assists, securing big plays throughout the game, including a four-point play where she got fouled on a made three.
The team has several scoring options, including increased minutes from Emilia Krstevski, who finished with 16 points and four rebounds, a crucial presence in the third quarter to help lift Canada to a big lead after Puerto Rico made a run of its own.
When asked about her play with her teammates, Krstevski said, “Always having a positive attitude and just holding each other accountable the whole time. The intangibles matter the most.”
Canada did just that, regaining a 20-point lead and going on a run to finish the game, with help from Jordyn Wheeler, who knocked down several jumpers to add 10 points to the final score.
Canada will now face Finland in the quarterfinal matchup on Friday, July 19 (time TBD).
“Let’s continue to get better and stronger with every game; let’s continue to make our presence felt; let’s make history!” said head coach Fabienne Blizzard.
