LEON, Mexico (July 20, 2024) - Canada’s U17 Women’s National Team battled to secure a big win over Finland and punch their ticket to the semifinals at the FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2024.
The trend of the last few games for Canada continued, as they jumped out to an 11-0 start in the first quarter, powered by Rachael Okokoh, Agot Makeer, and Yohana Fami.
At the end of the first quarter, Canada was ahead by nine points, thanks to help from Jahda Denis, Jordyn Wheeler, and Cece Parchment.
Although Canada finished the game with a large lead, that wasn’t always the case throughout the game. Midway through the second quarter, Finland went on their own run to make it a two-possession game.
When that happened, and Canada’s shots weren’t falling, Jahda Denis, who finished with 14 points, said that the team would “Continue to encourage and direct people to spots. Run a play that has been working well during the game, and find ways to get hot teammates touches.”
When it came to her own game, Denis said that she was “helping the team with my defensive presence.” Denis recorded five defensive rebounds and three steals, often helping recover the ball.
Canada finished the first half strong by executing on both ends of the floor.
The team held a strong lead in the second half and didn’t look back. Four players finished in double-digits, including Agot Makeer, who led again with 15 points, seven rebounds, and five steals.
Deniya Prawl hit a late three to score 14 points and grab eight rebounds. Yohana Fami was the other player in double figures, finishing with 11 points and six rebounds. She remained a solid presence on the inside.
Canada will now face Spain in the semifinals tonight at 10:30 p.m. ET / 7:30 p.m. PT for a spot in the gold medal game.
