IRAPUATO, Mexico (July 14, 2024) - Canada continued where they left off on Saturday when they defeated Chinese Taipei 112-59 to go up 2-0 in group play at the FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2024.
Rachael Okokoh started things for Canada, securing a bucket at the beginning of each half of basketball to set the pace. Okokoh finished with eight points and five rebounds.
Six of Canada’s players finished in double-digits, sharing the ball and hustling on the boards to perform on second-chance opportunities. Canada won the rebound battle 60-27.
“One of our big success criteria is capitalizing on our ability to rebound and create second and third-chance opportunities for each other,” said head coach Fabienne Blizzard. “Our emphasis has been on defence, and rebounding is a big part of that. Being able to own the boards on offence and defence with our abilities has provided an additional edge to our game.”
Agot Makeer finished first in scoring for the second straight game, knocking down three triples and scoring 22 points, five rebounds, and five steals.
“Scoring is not my top priority, but it is one of my strengths,” said Makeer. “I’ve felt really good about our team’s effort and contribution.”
Chance Berry went down with an ankle injury after a foul to the rim at 15-4 in the first quarter, not returning to the floor for the rest of the game.
Deniya Prawl continued showing prowess on the court, driving in transition and finishing with 19 points and seven rebounds.
Canada made everything look easy as they stormed to a 65-22 lead by halftime.
Savannah Swords continued to be a solid presence, finishing the game with 16 points, six rebounds, and four steals, often there to help clean up the possession on second-chance opportunities.
Jahda Denis provided more scoring relief with 11 points on 50 percent shooting from the floor, including two triples.
Jordyn Wheeler added 14 points, and Brooke McLeod had 10 points and six rebounds on the board.
Canada will play its final game in the group phase on Tuesday, July 16, against France at 2:30 p.m. ET / 11:30 a.m. PT on FIBA's YouTube channel. The team will then advance to the Round of 16.
