‍MIES, Switzerland (March 19, 2024) - Canada’s path to the podium in Paris this summer became clearer as the Men's and Women's Olympic Basketball Tournaments Paris 2024 draws were held earlier today at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball in Mies.

Canada’s Senior Men’s National Team was drawn into Group A along with the winner of the Piraeus (Greece) FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (July 27, time TBC), Australia (July 30, time TBC), and the winner of the Valencia (Spain) FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (August 2, time TBC). 

On the women’s side, the Canadian Senior Women’s National Team is in Group B and will face hosts, France (July 29, time TBC), Australia (August 1, time TBC) and Nigeria (August 4, time TBC). 

This will be the first time in 24 years that Canada’s women’s and men's basketball teams will compete together in an Olympic Games.  Paris 2024 will be the fourth consecutive Olympic Games appearance for the women’s team and their eighth appearance in the tournament since women’s basketball debuted at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.  While this is Canada’s first appearance on the men’s side since the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, it will be their tenth overall as they chase their second medal after capturing silver at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin.

This year's Olympic Games Basketball Tournaments will be held from July 27 to August 11 in France.  The group stage will be played at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille, while the Bercy Arena, located along the Seine River, will host the knockout stage for men's and women's basketball at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The 12 teams have been divided into three groups (A, B and C) of four (4) teams each. This stage of the competition will be played in a round-robin format, with each team playing all other teams in its group (a total of 3 games for each team).

The teams placed first and second in each group and the two best third-placed teams in the Group Phase qualify for the Final Phase.  A draw will take place following the conclusion of the Group Phase to determine the pairings of the Quarter-Finals.

The ceremony took place under the leadership of FIBA President Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani and FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis, as well as representatives from participating National Federations.
