REGINA (CIS) – The CIS Women’s Basketball Coaches Association proudly announced Sunday the organization had raised $90,450.62 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation in 2012-13 thanks to the sixth edition of its annual Shoot For The Cure initiative.

The impressive amount was unveiled between the first and second quarters of the gold medal final of the CIS championship at the University of Regina. Jeff Speedy, president of the WBCA, presented a cheque to Sherry Germaine from the CBCF.

An additional $20,103.34 was amassed by schools that elected to donate their fundraised money to local or provincial organizations, bringing this season’s Shoot For The Cure overall total to $110,553.96, and the six-year total to $622,948.54 since the initiative was launched in 2007-08 to raise awareness and money to fight the deadly disease.

For the second straight season, all 44 universities that field women’s hoops teams participated by holding one or numerous fundraising games or activities over the course of the campaign.

“I am thrilled that the WBCA and our women’s basketball student-athletes really got behind this initiative once again,” said Speedy, who is also the Shoot For The Cure project manager and head coach at UNB. “On some campuses, the athletic department and student-athletes from other sports were involved in a big way as well. This is a special day, when we get to announce such a huge contribution to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. I am already looking forward to see what we can do next year.”
