Development Women Beat Czech Republic in the First Game of Exhibition Play 72-66

(Czech Republic) - Canada's Development Women's team dug themselves out of a hole tonight winning in an epic comeback. The women battled the entire game struggling to claim the lead in the first three quarters but claimed it when it counted. Winning against Czech Republic 72-66.

Head Coach Fabian McKenzie: "Great first game for our team this year. We got ourselves in a hole and showed great resiliency to take the win. Bridget Carleton put in an incredibly impressive performance on both ends of the score to lead us in the second half. Looking forward to starting the tournament in two days."

Bridget Carleton: "This game was a good opportunity to get out and play someone new. We started figuring things out in the second half, started taking advantage of our strengths and it was fun to come out with a win. We're looking forward to starting the tournament."

In the first quarter the Czechs got a slight advantage over Canada leading 21-17. Bridget Carleton and Emily Potter both had an impressive performance scoring 5 and 6 points each. Carleton also secured 3 rebounds. Czech Republic had a similar start with Michaela Stejskalova scoring 6 and Alena Hanusova scoring 5.

Czech Republic held the lead in the second quarter. Their shots were more consistent with 59% from the field while Canada was only shooting 34%. They went into half time 44-38 for the Czech women.

Canada kept their momentum strong throughout the 3rd but still struggled to close the gap. The Czech women all had points on the board making them difficult to defend. While Canada was relying heavily on four players all with over 7 points.

There was a shift in power in the fourth quarter. Canada had amazing defence only allowing Czech Republic to score 6 points. They pushed the offence and scored 19 points to finish the game with a win 72-66.
