TORONTO, Ont. (Nov. 27, 2023) - Zach Edey and Shy Day-Wilson have been named the Toyota Canada Players of the Week for Nov. 20-26.
The reigning Naismith Trophy winner is back to his old tricks. Edey was dominant for the Boilermakers this past week, helping Purdue win the prestigious Maui Invitational Championship. The Toronto product recorded a double-double in each of the three wins, which all came over Top 25 ranked teams. Edey notched 28 points and 15 rebounds, to go along with two blocks, in the championship game in a narrow 78-75 win over No. 4 Marquette. As a result, Edey earned Big Ten Player of the Week honours, while helping Purdue top the latest edition of the AP Poll as the number-one ranked team in the nation. The Toronto post suited up for Canada this past summer, helping the Senior Men’s National Team both win bronze at the FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup 2023 and punch its ticket to the 2024 Olympic Games.
Rocking the orange and green after transferring to Duke following her sophomore season, Day-Wilson is making her name known down in Miami. The Toronto born junior guard recorded 20-point and 19-point performances for the Hurricanes en route to the program going 2-0 in the Miami Thanksgiving Tournament. Day-Wilson’s 19 points in the title game came via a perfect 7-7 day shooting — including 5-5 from beyond-the-arc — to help Miami move to 5-0 in non-conference play. As a result, she was named the Tournament's MVP. Day-Wilson, who was the ACC Freshman of the Year in 2021-22, represented Canada once again this past summer. She helped the U23 Women’s National Team claim silver at GLOBL JAM, winning her second medal at the event after being on the gold medal winning squad in 2022 for the inaugural edition of the tournament.
