TORONTO, Ont. (Aug. 21, 2023) - Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Michelle Plouffe have been named the Toyota Canada Players of the Week for Aug 14-20.
Gilgeous-Alexander helped lead Canada to an exhibition win over Spain ahead of the FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup 2023. Canada came from behind to defeat the reigning World Cup champions and No. 1 ranked team in FIBA World Ranking Presented by NIKE in overtime. Gilgeous-Alexander led all scorers with a game-high 22 points to go with eight rebounds and three assists in 33 minutes of play. The Hamilton, Ont. product is set to star in the FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup for the first time in his career after helping Canada finish 11-1 in qualifying.
Plouffe and Canada’s 3x3 Women’s National Team continued their dominance this weekend in Quebec City, winning the team’s fourth Stop of the 2023 FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series season. Canada claimed the Quebec Stop with a 21-19 win in the Final, as Plouffe connected on a two-pointer to help Canada win it all on home soil. Michelle was named co-MVP for the Stop along with sister Katherine, after leading the Stop in scoring with 7.2 points-per-game. Canada is set to compete in Debrecen, Hungary and Montreal before making their way to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia for the Final of the 3x3 Women’s Series.
