TORONTO, Ont. (July 25, 2022) - Johnny Berhanemeskel and Emily Potter have been named Canada Basketball Toyota Canada Players of the Week for July 18 – July 24.
Berhanemeskel averaged 16 points, four rebounds, and 2.5 assists as the Ottawa BlackJacks went 1-1 during last week’s action in the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL). The BlackJacks started the week with a loss to Newfoundland Growlers 94-80 but bounced back with a convincing 104-95 win over the Hamilton Honey Badgers. Berhanemeskel dropped 22 points in the win. Beginning his professional career in Europe in 2015, the Ottawa native has previously played in Estonia, Spain, Germany and Greece before heading to France to join Chorale Roanne Basket. Berhanemeskel represented Canada at the 2015 World University Games, and most recently, at the 2021 FIBA AmeriCup Qualifiers in Puerto Rico.
Last Wednesday, Potter helped the Astros De Jalisco (Mexico) capture the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional Femenil (LNBPF) playoff title after defeating Adelitas 69-64. Potter recorded 11 points, shooting 4-of-7 from field goal range, to go along with two rebounds and two assists in the win. Potter has represented Team Canada for over six years, most recently competing at the 2019 Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru. Potter also attended the Senior Women’s National Team camp in November 2021, and was named to the preliminary roster for the FIBA Women's World Cup Qualifying tournament this past February.
