Kabengele, Kyei named Players of the Week

TORONTO (Feb. 27, 2025) - Mfiondu Kabengele and Philipina Kyei have been named the Players of the Week for Feb. 17- 23.

Kabengele was a force for the Senior Men’s National Team as they competed in the final FIBA Men’s AmeriCup Qualifying Window, securing their place in the tournament this summer. The product of Burlington, Ont. recorded a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double performance against the Dominican Republic, followed by a dominant 24 points on 7-of-12 shooting and eight rebounds against Mexico to close out the window. The FIBA Men’s AmeriCup is set for Aug. 23-31 in Managua, Nicaragua where Canada will look to improve on a fourth-place finish in 2022.

Kyei, a center for the Oregon Ducks put up 20 points and a staggering career-high 25 rebounds in a Senior Day win over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights — the first 20-20 game by an Oregon women’s player in a decade. Capping off her collegiate career in style, the Calgary, Alta. native reached a major milestone just a week prior, grabbing her 1,000th career rebound, becoming only the sixth Duck to achieve this feat. Kyei last suited up for Canada with the Senior Women’s National Team in Victoria this past summer as part of their Olympic training camp roster in an exhibition game against Portugal. She also partook in training camp in Edmonton that summer in the lead-up to the 2024 Olympic Games.
