Kathy Shields Inducted to Canadian Sports Hall of Fame

Canada Basketball is thrilled to announce that Kathy Shields – former head coach of the Senior Women’s National Team – has been inducted as a Builder into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame.

Shields played an integral role in the growth of the Canadian women’s basketball program, coaching the University of Victoria Vikes women’s squad for 22 years and the SWNT for four years. She is also a member of Canada Basketball’s Hall of Fame, getting inducted in 2003.

“I’ve had the great privilege of watching Kathy coach and working with her over the years. She is a master of the game of basketball and her relationships with athletes were very special. Kathy is an excellent member of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame,” said Michele O’Keefe, Executive Director of Canada Basketball.

The induction into the Canada Sports Hall of Fame is a significant addition to an already sterling resume. Shields won eight CIAU/CIS national titles, nine Canada West Coach of the Year awards and has the Women’s Rookie of the Year trophy named in her honour.

Canada Basketball is proud to have Kathy Shields as a member of our family and congratulates her for the recognition of the work she has put into making this country a basketball powerhouse.
