TORONTO, Ont. (February 6, 2023) - Jamal Murray and Shaina Pellington have been named Toyota Canada Players of the Week for January 30 - February 5.
It was a big week for Murray, who amassed 30 points in all three of his games, leading the Nuggets to three consecutive wins. The highlight was a 41-point performance in the team’s win over Atlanta on Saturday night where he also chipped in seven assists and five rebounds. The Kitchener, Ont. native last suited up for Canada at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, where he helped lead the team to a silver medal — highlighted by a 22-point performance in a semifinal win against the United States. He is one of 14 players a part of a core committed to Canada Basketball ahead of this summer’s FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup and the lead up to the 2024 Olympic Games.
Pellington was instrumental for the No. 22 ranked Arizona Wildcats during an undefeated week, where they picked up wins over Pac 12 rivals UCLA and USC. After dropping 21 points in the win over the Bruins on Friday night, the Pickering, Ont. product was back to work on Saturday — Pellington led Arizona on a 11-0 run to force overtime, before scoring six of her 17 in overtime to record the win. She also chipped in seven assists and five rebounds in the victory. Pellington suited up for Canada this past summer, where she was a part of the U23 women’s national team’s gold medal at GLOBL JAM in Toronto.
