National Championships Notes: Day Two of Play Completed - Teams to advance to quarterfinals following group play

ST John’s, NFL. (August 7, 2024)—The Canada Basketball 15U and 17U Men’s and Women’s National Championships completed their second day of play in Toronto and St John’s today. The tournament runs from August 5th to 10th, 2024.

Final standings in pool play will be determined tomorrow morning, with quarterfinal games to follow. Here are the results from day two:

15U Women

  • After dropping their first game on day one, Quebec gets back in the win column with a 57-54 win against Saskatchewan, led by a valiant effort from Maelie Dionne with 18 points on 72.7 percent from the field.
  • Ontario continue their solid week with a 77-44 win over British Columbia, with every player (outside of one) scoring in the team win.
  • Alberta scores another big win, finishing 94-56 against Nova Scotia, with four players finishing in double digits.
  • Manitoba remains undefeated with a 70-34 win over New Brunswick. Madeleine Hamiel led the way with 19 points, but every other player (outside of one) got on the board.

17U Women

  • Alberta continues to be a strong presence in both age groups, with the 17U team recording a dominant 77-53 win over Manitoba. Brooke Wagner shot 85.7 percent from the field, finishing with 14 points and six rebounds. Jayda Queeley led with a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double.
  • Nova Scotia bounces back to win strongly in a 67-34 win over PEI after losing a close game to Saskatchewan on day one.
  • British Columbia gets the win on the 17U side with a 79-45 victory over New Brunswick. 
  • In the last 17U Women’s game of the day, Saskatchewan pulled out a thrilling 61-59 win over hosts Newfoundland & Labrador in a game that went down to the wire.

15U Men

  • Ontario pulled out the 109-80 victory over Quebec, which may impact the standings heading into tomorrow's quarterfinals.
  • British Columbia and Manitoba also defeated their opponents by 10+ points, beating both Alberta and hosts Newfoundland & Labrador, respectively.
  • Nova Scotia gets past New Brunswick with a 77-68 victory, led by Michael Tynes jr, who had a 22-point and 13-rebound double-double.

17U Men

  • The 17U Men’s games held some engaging results today, with British Columbia squeaking past Quebec 80-74 and Ontario defeating Alberta 85-77 in overtime after a last-second move in the fourth quarter to tie it up.
  • Saskatchewan and New Brunswick were on the other end of the results, dropping games against Nova Scotia and Manitoba after winning their games on day one.

‍Quarterfinals are up next for the provinces that advance from pool play.
