ST. CATHARINES, Ont. (August 11, 2022) – Day 4 of the boys and girls basketball event at the 2022 Canada Games on Thursday saw both tournaments in the quarterfinals phase, with some teams advancing on to the semifinals, and others forced to make due in consolation games.

In the girls’ tournament, Team Ontario had little difficulty handling Team British Columbia as it came away with an 86-70 win to advance to the semifinals. There, it will square off against Team Alberta as it topped Team Manitoba 94-80 in that quarterfinal matchup. Team Quebec reached the semis with a 77-56 decision over Team New Brunswick and will see Team Saskatchewan after it dropped Team Nova Scotia, 78-56.

And in the consolation games, Team P.E.I advanced to the ninth-10th-place game with an 80-46 victory against Team Northwest Territories. Team Newfoundland and Labrador will join their east coast rival in that game Friday as it beat Team Yukon, 93-29.

Nova Scotia beat New Brunswick, 90-87, in a thriller of a contest to open the boys’ quarterfinal action. Facing Nova Scotia in Friday’s semifinal will be Ontario after they took down Newfoundland and Labrador, 99-71. British Columbia routed Saskatchewan, 117-81, and Alberta defeated Quebec, 72-70, in a seesaw affair that saw Josh Ahayere hit a pull-up jumper with less than a second left to play to ice the game for Alberta, setting up the other semifinal matchup.

In consolation play, P.E.I. beat the Northwest Territories, 81-60, to reach the ninth-10th place game and Manitoba advanced to that game with P.E.I. after triumphing over Yukon, 103-49.
