Senior Women’s National Team Head Coach Víctor Lapeña signs professional contract in Turkey

MERSIN, Turkey (May 31, 2024) - Cukurova Basketbol (ÇBK) Mersin, a Turkish club in Euroleague Women, announced today that they have signed Senior Women’s National Team Head Coach Víctor Lapeña to a three-year contract as the new head coach of the team.

The news comes shortly after a contract extension between Canada Basketball and Lapeña earlier last week. The extension will see him coach Canada's Senior Women’s National Team through the FIBA Women’s World Cup 2026.

Lapeña has been the head coach of Canada’s Senior Women’s National Team since January 2022, leading the team to their fourth-straight Olympic qualification and a 17-7 record in FIBA competitions. He has previous coaching experience across many different leagues, countries, and levels of competition.

ÇBK Mersin is ranked third in Euroleague Women’s standings, behind ZVVZ USK Praha and Fenerbahce Alagöz Holding, Lapeña’s former team. ÇBK Mersin are previous winners of the Turkish President Cup and the Turkish Cup, placing silver in the Euroleague Women’s playoffs and are 4x Turkish League Playoff Runners up.

Lapeña and the Canadian Senior Women’s National Team will now look towards their upcoming training camp in Victoria, B.C. before heading to Europe in preparation for the Paris Olympics.
