The Senior Women's National Team (SWNT) finished its European exhibition tour on a winning note by rallying back in the second half to beat Turkey 51-46. The team compiled a 5-3 record over the course of two weeks with stops in the Czech Republic, Serbia and France.

Head Coach Lisa Thomaidis commented on the game and European tour by saying it was a "great way to finish a long first phase. This was a tremendous team win against a quality opponent. We are extremely proud of our effort – a great team win."

Sarnia, Ont. native Kendel Ross opened the game with a three-pointer. As the quarter continued, both teams played tough on the defensive side of the ball and it reflected on the scoreboard. After the opening 10 minutes, Canada owned a 13-10 advantage after shooting 55 per cent (6/11) from the field. In the second frame, the game seemed to open up for the Turkish team. Through a strong defensive effort and efficient shooting, Turkey was able to build a 31-23 lead at the half.

Canada stood tall on defense in the third quarter and held Turkey to a mere four points in the 10-minute frame, while scoring 12 points to tie the game at 35. In the fourth, the Canadians kept up their strong play and put together a 16-5 run to propel the team to the victory. Kia Nurse led all scorers with 16 points and added six rebounds. Tamara Tatham grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and had eight points in the contest.

London Olympian Alisha Tatham was pleased with the team’s overall effort. "We executed on offense and our defense really came together.  We had fun, our defensive clicked and it is wonderful to end our European tour with a win."

The SWNT’s exhibition matches this summer are in preparation for September’s FIBA Americas Championship in Mexico. The tournament is a qualifying event for the 2014 FIBA World Championship in Turkey.
