Team Canada exhibition games against No. 7 ranked Brazil set for June 26, 27, 28

EDMONTON, AB – The Senior Women’s National Team tips-off an exciting summer for our Senior Women’s National Team. Ranked No. 9 in the world, Team Canada qualified for the World Championships winning the Silver Medal last year at the FIBA Americas tournament.

“Our women have an extensive training session this summer here in Edmonton preparing them for the best possible result at the World’s in Turkey this September,” said Denise Dignard, Director of Women's High Performance. “Training here in Edmonton builds on the storied tradition of women’s basketball that began with the Edmonton Grads that won the first ever world women’s title in 1924. It is truly inspirational.”

The SWNT training camp begins June 9, leading to the Edmonton Grads International Classic (EGIC) – a three-game exhibition series against No. 7 ranked Brazil on June 26, 27 and 28. Two more training camps will be held follow in the months following the Brazil games and an exhibition tour of Europe is scheduled. The FIBA World Championships for Women is set for the end of September in Turkey.

Edmonton is home to Canada’s Senior Women’s National Team. Training is at the Saville Community Sports Centre on the University of Alberta’s south campus, a 32,516 m2 multi-sport facility.

“We are so very proud of this team,” explained Lisa Thomaidis, Head Coach, Senior Women’s National Team.  “We are looking forward to building upon the successes that we had last year.  We have a full schedule of exhibition games this summer that will challenge and prepare us for the World Championships in September.”
