Thomas Kennedy and Cassandra Brown are our Canada Basketball Toyota Canada Players of the Week for May 30 - June 5.
It was a strong week for Kennedy and the Fraser Valley Bandits in the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL), splitting a pair of games against the Saskatchewan Rattlers. The 6’9 forward averaged 16 points, seven rebounds and two blocks over the week, shooting an impressive 78% from field goal range. Hailing from Windsor, Ont., Kennedy was drafted by the Fraser Valley Bandits with the seventh pick in the first round of the 2022 CEBL U SPORTS Draft following a stellar season with the Windsor Lancers. Averaging 22.3 points and 15.3 rebounds per game for the Lancers, Kennedy was named an OUA first-team all-star. This is the third season in the CEBL for Kennedy after previously being drafted twice by the Hamilton Honey Badgers on U SPORTS developmental contracts.
Playing for Mt Gambier in the Australian State League, Brown led her team to a 67-61 win over Frankston on Sunday behind a 31-point performance, shooting 13-of-20 from the floor to go along with 11 rebounds, and three assists. From Vernon, BC, Brown attended the University of Portland (NCAA) before heading to Europe to play professionally in Poland, Slovakia, Sweden and Greece. Brown helped Canada earn bronze at the 2010 FIBA Americas U18 Championship, assisted Canada to qualify for the FIBA U18 Championships in 2011 and represented Canada in 2019 during the Belgium Tournament, the Great Britain Exhibition and at the Pan American Games.
