The 15U National Championships kicked off on Monday August 5, 2013 in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. The following is a recap of day one of the tournament.

15U WOMEN

New Brunswick 71 – Saskatchewan 44

Taylor Cooke led all scorers with 18 points and 11 boards as New Brunswick beat Saskatchewan 71-44 in the opening game of the 2013 15U National Championships.

New Brunswick’s Reese Baxendale added 16 points and 8 rebounds and Bridget Frazee had 12 points in the match.

Saskatchewan was led by Lauryn Prokop who scored 11 points in the game.

Nova Scotia 67 – Alberta 27

Nova Scotia defeated Alberta 67-27 in the first day of tournament action.

Katie Upham scored 13 points, while Ty’keia Beals added 11 points in the match for Nova Scotia.

For Alberta, Jamie Bain scored 9 points leading the team in scoring for this match.

Quebec 47 – Ontario 60

Ontario won their first game of the tournament, defeating Quebec by a score of 60-47.

Kendra VanLeeuwen was impressive for Ontario as she scored 14 points while grabbing 5 rebounds and 2 steals.  

Myriam Leclerc scored a game-high of 20 points for Quebec.

Manitoba 42 – British Columbia 64

British Columbia was off to a winning start, beating Manitoba 64-42.

British Columbia’s Gabrielle Laguerta had a very impressive performance by scoring 20 points and recording 4 steals in the victory. bBobbi-Jo Colburn added 11 points.

Keylyn Filewich and Faith Baiye both led Manitoba in scoring with 8 points and together grabbing 15 rebounds in the game.

15U MEN

Alberta 99 – Prince Edward Island 40

Aher Uguak opened the tournament with an impressive 25 point performance to help Alberta defeat Prince Edward Island 99-40.

Uguak wasn’t alone for Alberta as Benoit Kapinga scored 14 points and Ogot Ogot added 12 points and 9 rebounds.

Despite the loss, Max Ramsay scored a team-high of 12 points while adding 3 rebounds for Prince Edward Island.

New Brunswick 66 – Newfoundland 48

New Brunswick started the tournament off with a 66-48 win over the home team Newfoundland.

Leo Titarenko had a stellar performance raking in a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds for New Brunswick, while Chris Spurrell scored a team-high of 14 points, adding 4 boards and 4 assists.

Despite the loss, Christopher Dobbin had an outstanding performance for Newfoundland. Dobbin contributed a double-double scoring 16 points and adding an outstanding game-high of 19 rebounds.

Quebec 66 – British Columbia 45

Quebec swept by British Columbia in day 1 action with a 66-45 win.

William Boyer-Richard led the charge for Quebec scoring 15 points and recording 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Anthony Longpre added 12 boards for Quebec.  

Howard Wang put in a great effort for British Columbia scoring a game-high of 19 points in the match.

Nova Scotia 80 – Saskatchewan 49

It was a great team-effort for Nova Scotia in their 80-49 win over Saskatchewan.

Chris Towle led Nova Scotia with 17 points, adding 4 rebounds and 6 assists, while Jarvis Bernard-Colley had a double-double with 10 points and 15 boards in the match.

Saskatchewan’s leading scorers were Jayce Wingate and Brandon Bonneau both with 12 points.
