2016 Olympic Game Four Preview: Canada Vs United States

First place in Group B is on the line as Canada takes on the United States at the Rio Games.

The North American neighbours come into the game with identical 3-0 records and having both clinched a quarter final berth.

Canada secured its place in the next round with a 68-58 victory over Senegal on Wednesday. Kia Nurse led the team with 14 points and Tamara Tatham recorded 13 points and 10 rebounds as Team Canada won a third straight game for the first time in Olympic women's basketball.

Canada defeated Serbia 71-67 on Aug. 8 and China 90-68 on Aug. 6. The United States has thus far posted wins over Serbia, Senegal, and Spain.

After playing each other, Canada and the United States will have one more game on their Group B schedules, against Spain and China, respectively, on Sunday. The quarter finals will feature crossover play between Group A and Group B teams, with the first place team meeting fourth place and third playing second.

Facts and figures:

  • Kia Nurse, who is heading into her third season at the University of Connecticut, will face her Huskies head coach Geno Auriemma and former teammate Breanna Stewart on Team USA. The United States features five UConn grads on its 12-player roster.
  • Going back to the 2014 FIBA Women's World Championship, Canada has won 16 consecutive games at major international tournaments, a span that also includes last summerâ??s Pan Am Games and FIBA Americas Championship.
  • Canada is giving up just 64.3 points per game, the fewest in Group B. Team USA is second at 67.7 points against.
  • Shona Thorburn trails Joanne Sargent by just one assist as the all-time leader in
  • Canadian Olympic women's basketball history. Sargent, who captained Team Canada in 1976, totalled 35 assists at the Summer Games.
