After beginning the 2016 Summer Games with a win against China on Saturday, Canada looks to continue its early momentum in Rio where it takes on Serbia.

The match is important for both teams, as Canada looks to maintain a share of first place in the Group B standings and move closer to securing a quarterfinal berth, while the Serbians are hungry for a win afte dropping their opening contest to Spain on Sunday. The top four of the six teams in Group B will advance to the quarter-final round at the conclusion of the round-robin group stage.

Saturday’s 90-68 defeat of China was a historic victory that saw three milestones for the Canadian Olympic women’s basketball team: most points scored in a single game; largest margin of victory; and the first time winning its opening game.

Tamara Tatham registered 20 points and six rebounds for Canada, which trailed for less than a minute in the entire game and out-scored China in each of the four quarters. Every Canadian player scored at least 2 points, and nine had five or more.

Serbia narrowly lost to Spain, 65-59, after being tied at halftime against FIBA's No. 3 ranked team. Jelena Milovanovic led Serba with 17 points.

Facts and figures:

  • This is Canada’s second game of 2016 against a team ranked lower by FIBA. Canada beat No. 13 Cuba 77-58 at an exhibition tournament in Spain on June 5
  • Canada and Serbia have never previously played each other in a major international women’s basketball tournament at the senior level
  • Canada is going for consecutive wins in the Olympics women’s basketball tournament for the first time since beating China and Australia back-to-back at the 1984 Los Angeles Games
  • Tamara Tatham went 4/4 from the outside against China, the most three-pointers she has ever made in 152 career games with Canada at the senior level.
