Canada looks to advance to the Olympic women's basketball semi final for the first time when it takes on France in a quarter final match at the Rio Games.

Canada advanced past the group stage for the second straight Olympics by finishing third in Group B with a 3-2 record. France also went 3-2 and was the second place team in Group A.

This is the third meeting in 10 weeks between the teams, with Team Canada having won a pair of exhibition games against France, the most recent a 72-63 victory late last month at the USA Basketball Showcase in New York's Madison Square Garden.

After starting 3-0, the Canadians have dropped their last two games, including a hard-fought 73-60 defeat against Spain on Sunday. Team France has been off since Saturday, when it lost 79-71 to Japan.

Team Canada is into the quarterfinals for just the second time ever, and second consecutive Games, following 2012 when it was eliminated by the USA in London. France is 1-1 all-time in the quarterfinal round, losing to South Korea in 2000 before getting past the Czech Republic in 2012.

The winner of Tuesday's game will play either the United States or Japan in a semi-final on Thursday.

Facts and figures:

• Today marks the one-year anniversary of Team Canada qualifying for Rio 2016 by winning the FIBA Americas Championship. Canada beat Cuba 82-66 in the championship final before a sellout crowd in Edmonton on Aug. 16, 2015.
• Half of Team Canada played professionally in France during the 2015-16 season: Miranda Ayim (Basket Landes), Lizanne Murphy (Angers), Kim Gaucher and Michelle Plouffe (Mondeville), Katherine Plouffe and Shona Thorburn (Nantes Reze).
• Canada met France in each of its last two trips to the Olympics, with both games coming during the group stage. France won 70-58 in 2000 and 64-60 four years ago.
• Gaucher grabbed her 50th career Olympics rebound, against Spain on Sunday, joining Dianne Norman, Sylvia Sweeney and current Team Canada assistant coach Bev Smith as the only Canadians to reach that milestone.
• Kia Nurse ranked first among all players in Group B with 31 free-throw attempts in 5 games. She converted 25 of them for a team-leading 81.6 free-throw percentage.
