50 Athletes Invited to Women’s National Age Group Assessment Camp

/

Mar 11, 2015

Fifty athletes (26 Cadette and 24 Junior) from across the country have been invited to participate in the Women’s National Age Group Assessment Camps at the University of Toronto, Mississauga and Humber College.  The Cadette Assessment Camp will take place from March 28 to April 1 at Humber College, while the Junior Camp will be at the University of Toronto, Mississauga and Humber College from March 27-30.

The objective of this camp is to provide a national training environment with international focus to top identified athletes in a variety of age groups ranging from those born in 1996 and later. At the camp, National Team sport scientists, coaches and technical staff will identify athletes who will be invited to the next activity of the 2015 Cadette and Junior National Team programs.

“We look forward to this opportunity to assess the progress made by these young nationally identified athletes and for our coaches to provide further direction on their individual performance plans” said Denise Dignard, Director of Women’s High Performance.  “We are also excited to once again bring together key coaches, technical leaders and mentors from across the country who are all committed to the long-term development of podium athletes for the senior national team.  When we gather individuals who are all striving for excellence, the energy is tremendous and sparks the passion for continued growth.”

This past summer, the Cadette Women’s National Team, led by head coach Carly Clarke, finished 6th at the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championships for Women. In 2015, athletes born during 1999 or later will take part in the 2015 FIBA Americas U16 Championships for Women in Mexico from June 23-28.

The Junior Women’s National Team finished 2nd at the 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Championships in Colorado Springs, qualifying them for the FIBA World Championships. This is the sixth-consecutive qualification for the team under head coach Rich Chambers. This summer, athletes born during 1996 or later will participate in the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championships for Women, held in Russia from July 16-26.

Canada is currently ranked 4th overall in the FIBA Women’s Age Group rankings.
