It has been a pleasure and an honour to cover, watch and get to know some astonishing athletes over a long career, a truly delightful part of the job that can never, ever be taken for granted.

Some we all know well, Vince and Steve Nash and Rocket Ismail back in the day, too many Olympians to list completely and enough Robbie Alomar to have seen true brilliance at work.

Some, though, have fallen a bit under the radar, sadly, for a vast majority of casual sports fans; it doesn't mean they weren't great or accomplished and it's our job to make sure they get their due.

One who fits into that category - and Irregulars will know this is an old point of mine made often - was Bev Smith, who at one point was among the top handful of women basketball players on earth, back in a day when women's sports didn't get nearly the attention it deserved.

Well, it was pretty cool to wake up this morning, check out the tweeter machine to find out what I'd missed either while napping on the couch or sleeping, and see that Bev has been named to the Pac-12 all-Century team.
