ST. CATHARINES, Ont. (August 13, 2022) – Friday was the penultimate day of the boys’ and girls’ basketball event at the 2022 Canada Games, featuring semifinal games, more consolation matchups and some final placement games as Day 5 of the two tournaments were played.

Team British Columbia will face Team Ontario in the final of the boys’ tournament Saturday, while it will be Team Saskatchewan taking on Team Alberta in the girls’ final.

The B.C. boys knocked off Alberta, 98-74, to reach the final. In that contest, Alberta’s Bubu Benjamin and British Columbia’s Tate Christiansen both got ejected as tempers flared late with the game well in hand for B.C. In the other boys’ semifinal, Ontario hung on to survive in overtime against Team Nova Scotia, 100-98, to book its gold-medal date with B.C. Davante Hackett put in a driving layup with 3.3 seconds left to put Ontario ahead for good.

On the girls’ side, Saskatchewan took out Quebec with a 61-57 victory, while Alberta made it past Ontario, 80-71, in a battle between two of the country’s best point guard prospects in Alberta’s Delaney Gibb and Ontario’s Taija Sta. Maria.

The two bronze-medal games Saturday will see Alberta facing Nova Scotia in the boys’ event and Quebec versus Ontario in the girls’ tournament.

Elsewhere on Friday, in the boys’ tournament, Quebec defeated Saskatchewan, 115-78, to advance to Saturday’s fifth-place game. They will be joined by Team New Brunswick, who trounced Team Newfoundland and Labrador, 100-72, to reach that game. Additionally, Team Manitoba’s boys’ team finished its tournament with a ninth-place finish after it beat Team P.E.I, 98-52.

Nova Scotia squeezed past New Brunswick, 78-75, in an overtime thriller to reach the fifth-place game of the girls’ competition. Nova Scotia will see British Columbia in that contest after they edged Manitoba, 71-68. As well, Newfoundland and Labrador finished their tournament in ninth, taking out P.E.I., 104-75.

And both the boys and girls’ tournaments saw the battle for 11th place go between Team Yukon and Team Northwest Territories with Yukon coming out on top in the boys’ competition, 87-78, and the Northwest Territories winning in the girls’ contest, 65-43.
