Cadet Men Handle Puerto Rico, Move to 2-0 in Exhibition Play

(Toronto, Ont.) - In the second game of the FIBA World Championship preparation tournament, Canada beat Puerto Rico, 79-62.

Jamal Murray led the Cadet Men’s National Team in scoring with 18 points on 6-9 shooting from the floor, while also grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.

“I thought we were very good defensively. The guys are starting to gel as a team and we are going to take advantage of our time together here in France to prepare for Dubai,” said head coach Dave DeAveiro.

Canada won the first quarter and did not look back on their way to a second-straight victory.

The Cadets stymied the Puerto Rico offence, holding the team to eight points in the first quarter – including two points over a five-minute span - while scoring 15 themselves.

Puerto Rico improved slightly in the second quarter, but could not corral the Canadian offence. DeAveiro took his team to the locker room with a 42-29 lead.

A shaky Canadian third quarter put Puerto Rico back in contention. Canada only scored 12 points, while their opponents scored 18.

With a 25-point final quarter, Canada put an end to the comeback effort and prevailed, 79-62.

Next up for the Canadians is a third exhibition game against Australia. Tip-off is set for 11:30 a.m. EST.
