Canada Basketball Announces Invitees For The Senior Women’s “b” Team, Staff And Schedule

Toronto – Canada Basketball announced the list of invitees for the senior women’s “B” team tryout by invitation, team staff and also the team schedule. The 14 selected athletes, from coast to coast will compete for a spot onto the senior women’s “B” team in Toronto, Ontario at Humber College.

The team features three returning players from last year’s development team, Justine Colley, Miah-Marie Langlois, and Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe. Rounding out the roster are other former age-group national team players, or tryout invitees.

2012 SENIOR WOMEN’S “B” TEAM – STAFF

The team will be coached by Fabian McKenzie (Cape Breton, NB). Currently, Fabian coaches at Cape Breton University, he has been named AUS coach of the year on four different occasions and was named CIS Coach of the Year in 2006. He has also been named Cape Breton Sports Heritage Awards coach of the year on two occasions and received the 2008 Red Bob MacDonald award for his outstanding contribution to basketball on Cape Breton Island. McKenzie has also worked with the senior women’s national team for the past two years as a scout/video coach.

The assistant coaches for the 2012 senior women’s “B” team will be former University of Calgary head coach, Shawnee Harle and University of Windsor head coach, Chantal Vallee.

Harle finished her 18th and final season this year with the University of Calgary Dino’s and leaves as the longest-serving head coach in school history. During her tenure, she had a .597 winning percentage and won the Canada West coach of the year three times (1996, 2000 and 2008). Harle has worked as an apprentice/assistant coach at the 1996 Olympics and was the assistant coach on the 2011 development women’s national team.

Chantal Vallee has been coaching at the University of Windsor for the past eight seasons. In the last two seasons, she has led the Lancers to back-to-back CIS women’s basketball championships and has won the OUA Fox 40 overall female coach of year twice (2009 and 2011). Vallee was an assistant coach for the 2010 and 2011 junior women’s national team. In 2011, she helped guide the junior women’s team to a fifth place showing, at the FIBA U19 World Championships for Women.

The senior women's “B” team has already begun tryouts/training camp at Humber College. The team will practice and train until May 17, before they travel to Europe to play five exhibition games against Montenegro (2 games) and Belgium (3 games).
