Canada Basketball now accepting nominations for Canada Basketball Board of Directors Athlete Representative positions

TORONTO (October 15, 2024) – Canada Basketball is accepting nominations for Athlete Representatives to join the Canada Basketball Board of Directors.

Interested athletes can apply for one of two (2) Athlete Representative positions, one men’s and one women’s, ahead of the nomination deadline of Thursday, October 31.

Canada Basketball aims to ensure that athletes have a voice in decisions affecting their well-being, development, and success within the sport. The athlete Representative (AR) plays a vital role as a liaison between fellow athletes and the organization’s leadership.

The Athlete Representative is an elected position from the pool of current and retired Senior Men’s National Team or Senior Women’s National Team 5v5 or 3x3 athletes who represent the interests, concerns, and perspectives of the athletes within Canada Basketball. They facilitate communication between athletes and the organization, providing feedback on policies, strategies, and programs while advocating for the athletes.

To be eligible for the Athlete Representative position, a candidate must:

- Be an active or recently retired athlete within the Canada Basketball program.

Active: Have Senior National Team experience and have been named to a CB Senior Team final roster in at least four separate competition windows over the last two Olympic quads (2017 – 2020 and 2021 – 2024)

Alumni: their last Senior National Team roster nomination must be within eight years of the observer appointment year (currently 2017)

- Demonstrate leadership qualities and have a strong understanding of the needs and concerns of athletes.

- Be willing and available to dedicate the required time for meetings and duties.

A vote to determine the two Athlete Representative appointees will be held following the nomination deadline. All male athletes from the eligibility period will vote for the male appointee, and all female athletes from the eligibility period will vote for the female appointee.  Once the vote has concluded, the athletes will be confirmed by the Canada Basketball Board of Directors Nominating Committee.

Each Athlete Representative is appointed for a term of 2 years, with the option for reappointment subject to mutual agreement.
